  • Unhinged – Cabinet Doors

Feel like you are in a constant cycle of replacing your cabinet door hinges? I feel that way too. I am expecting cabinet door hinges to last more than 2 years. In fact throughout my life I never gave a thought to those hidden wonders until they started failing soon after a kitchen remodel.

I’ll give you one specific example. The hinge type is known as european or concealed with a self close behavior. A soft close is a different type of behavior that has the door gently drift back to the closed position. I can look up the purchase receipt to get the brand name. I think the hinges were purchased at Home Depot. Exact replacements are not available from Home Depot.

After not finding an exact match at Home Depot’s web site I tried a Google search. I used a longtail search string
replacement kitchen cabinet door hinge model 30.310-11.02

That model number appears on black plastic back of the Blum (brand name?) hinge I have in my hand that I removed from one of the cabinet doors. This label does not display Blum but it does say it is made in Austria.

Most of the search results were from Amazon vendors. I clicked on one link in the search results that brought me to the Amazon vendor. Everyone is competing for your attention. The ones who paid to be seen get the better positions on the page.

amazon vendor is Hondafi displays with Amazon’s Choice banner
looks like he has multiple listings for the same product, one has more purchases than the other
This listing has a more accurate description for material and finish type but still incorrect

Hondafi made a video too that is not narrated, just background music and captions describing the actions.

I remember coming across the name Reliabilt as one of the search results I looked into listed on Lowe’s website. They have a better explainer video for how to measure the overlay for european or concealed hinge type compared to the Amazon vendors and Blum, the vendor responsible for starting me on this course of misery. Just to be clear, I am not happy that many of my hinges have failed or will be failing soon. Blum is the brand that I purchased while completing my kitchen remodel. They alone shoulder the blame for an inferior product.

Seeing how many Amazon vendors have jumped at this opportunity to sell replacement hinges I can only conclude that the inferior quality is by design and driven solely by greed. Even the Blum warranty I found on their web site is ambiguous about what it covers. However it clearly states the product itself is not covered. I purchased a hinge. Is that not the product? The actual wording of Blum’s Limited Warranty is below.

Blum, Inc. (Blum) warrants its lift systems, hinges and/or drawer runners,
contained in this product, but not the product itself, against defects in material
and workmanship for as long as the original consumer purchaser owns the
    products.

Bottom line is Blum is forbidden from my shopping list, forever.

Taking a closer look at Reliabilt.

I liked the price and the better description by vendor Aituzero on Amazon
I put this one in my shopping cart – 8 pack for $30. Again, this is a replacement equivalent to the Blum but not actually made by Blum.

I also wanted to try the soft close this I found a single pair of hinges from Amazon seller Furniware US
I put this soft close, 2 pack for $7.39 in my cart and checked out.

I still have not solved the problem of poor quality hinges. I am testing a new manufacturer. The product picture looks a little different. If the hinge has plastic parts it will fail just the the others. Any manufacturers you find that make all metal hinges please let me know. I am willing to pay for quality so it lasts. Manufacturers must understand that the overall cost of their product to a consumer also includes that consumer’s time which far outweighs the cost of the product.

List of products, manufacturers and their 5 star ratings are below.
